A college is only as strong as its
faculty, and if Montreat College had more professors of the caliber of Brian Fuller,
Im certain it would boast a significant academic and ministerial reputation.
En
route to a B.A. in English Secondary Education, Brians classes in Speech
Communication, Public Affairs Communication, and Development of Cinema were required of
me. To my surprise -- for I had heard
nightmarish tales and rumors of Brians demanding reputation -- I enjoyed these
classes more than any others. One class
period was all that was necessary for me to see in Brian the most dedicated, passionate,
demanding, and honest scholar and artist I had yet to, and would likely ever, encounter.
As
a Christian, Brian challenges students by moving them out of a comfortable Christianity,
prompting them to fashion a thoroughly examined Christian walk. Students leave class prepared to address both the
challenges of The Faith and those of a post-modern world, who demand nothing less than a
sound account for that faith. With his
fingers on the pulse of pop-culture and art, Brian uses cinema not only as a means of
teaching the art of film, but also as a historical and social commentary. Cinema remains the most important of my classes at
Montreat. As a seminary student anticipating
ministry, I see film not merely as art but as the vehicle for which I can communicate the
Gospel to both Christian and unbelieving audiences.
Where truth is spoken, I can point believers and unbelievers alike to the author of
all Truth, the Lord.
As
effective as Brian is inside the classroom, I would do him, nor you, any justice in
relegating his influence to that sphere alone. Of
my numerous professors, no one spent as much time with me outside of class as did Brian,
who found numerous opportunities to open both his office and home where he continued his
work as a counselor, teacher, and a friend. To
this day I consult Brian regarding my academic career, projects for both school and
workplace, and my walk with Christ.
My
fondness for Montreat is deeply woven with my fondness for Brian. His teaching has been a benefit I long to repay.
Sincerely.
